Is there an extension on filing taxes for Los Angeles residents in 2025?

Yes! Did you hear the news, LA? If you live in Los Angeles County, you automatically get an extension on filing (and paying, if you owe any) taxes for calendar year 2024! Instead of the regular tax day of April 15, 2025, all Los Angeles County residents get an automatic extension to October 15, 2025.

The IRS is giving everyone an extra 6 months to do their taxes because of the LA wildfires earlier this year, but you don’t have to be directly affected by the fires to get the extension. It applies to all 10 million or so of us Angelenos.

Do Los Angeles residents also get an extension on paying taxes in 2025?

Yes. It’s worth re-iterating that, if you owe any taxes for calendar year 2024, you also get an extension on paying them until October 15, 2025. (In most years, you can easily get an extension on filing tax returns, but you would still need to pay the taxes on time, otherwise you would be subject to late fees and interest.) This year, there are no fees or interest as long as you pay by October 15.

Note also that if you are subject to estimated quarterly tax payments, which would normally be due April 15, June 16, and September 15, 2025, these are also postponed until October 15, 2025. Estimated tax payments are typically required if you are a freelancer, self-employed, or otherwise have any business income.

What happens if I get a notice from the IRS saying I owe fees or interest because I didn’t file or pay by April 15?

If you waited to file and pay your 2024 taxes until October, and you receive a notice from the IRS related to a late filing or late payment penalty, you should call the phone number on the notice to have the IRS abate (remove) the penalty.
